It was a tremendous honour it was to have played a small role in BC's BIG Oscars moment earlier this year. We are so incredibly proud of The Sartorial Shop team and their collaboration with celebrity stylist Amanda May Daly on designing and styling red carpet looks for Sugarcane director Julian Brave NoiseCat, Ed Archie NoiseCat and Chief Willie Sellars.
We had the opportunity to shine light on all the designers who played a role in crafting the incredible red carpet looks including Creative Director and CEO of The Sartorial Shop Zahir Rajani, and Indigenous designers Pam Baker, Joan Scarff, Denise Wallace and Jennifer Younger.
The story of Sugarcane is one of honour and impact, and demonstrates the true resilience of the Indigenous community. It is also the first story in documentary format by a North American Indigenous filmmaker to have been nominated for an Oscar in the Academy Awards' 97 year history.
National Geographic acquired the rights to Sugarcane in 2024 and coins it "a stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life," and "an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning."
If you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, it's available on Hulu and Disney+.
Thank you for giving the Venture Strategies team the opportunity to illuminate
Indigenousfashion and what Emily Kassie, co-director of Sugarcane calls "Canada's origin story."
